Mac Rebennack, better know as Dr. John,
“carries the city’s lore in his fingers, his
scratchy voice and his memory” (All About
Jazz). He started out as a teenaged session
musician in the Crescent City in the ‘50s,
interacting first-hand with such New Orleans
legends as Professor Longhair, James Booker
and Fats Domino. The Doctor’s approach offers
New Orleans R&B, soul, jazz, rock ‘n’ roll and some voodoo craziness mixed up in a musical
gumbo that has earned him a reputation
as “New Orleans’ greatest living musical
ambassador” (National Public Radio).
Long known as The First Family of New
Orleans, the Neville Brothers offer up “a
fearsomely soulful lead singer, flawless
harmony vocals, and the finest rhythm section
in New Orleans” (Rolling Stone). Aaron Neville
scored a huge national hit in 1967 with the
classic ballad “Tell It Like It Is,” while Art
formed the legendary Meters, who defined New
Orleans funk through their own records (“Cissy
Strut,” for instance), and as the in-studio
backing band for artists such as Lee Dorsey,
Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Paul McCartney and
Robert Palmer. In the late ‘70s, Art and Aaron
joined up with brothers Cyril and Charles – the
Neville Brothers have been an institution ever
since, serving up blistering performances that
have cemented their standing as “one of the
best live bands in the country” (Billboard).
